North of Denver you wander into Thornton, and you can tell immediately. The run down buildings, boarded up windows, and gang graffiti declaring this to be claimed by many Hispanic gangs.

The people here move about with furtive looks. There's not a lot of singing or dancing in the streets. It's not too uncommon to hear the noise of someone crying out in pain or gunshots from some gang rivalry.

The store fronts are either bilingual, or just in Espanol. There is no visible presence of police here. If they are around, they're undercover. Drug deals go on in broad daylight and no one seems to want to see as so many simply avert their eyes and walk the other way.
